| There are over 200 million orphans in the world today and that number is growing. Having the philosophy of “out of sight, out of mind” is very convenient. I know this firsthand because I was once unaware of the millions of unwanted and forgotten children and the lives that they lead. It wasn't until my decision to adopt internationally that my eyes and heart were fully opened. I adopted my daughter from Bulgaria in 2002 and currently I am in the process of adopting again. Upon visiting my daughter in her home country, I was heartbroken to see the conditions in which she and the other children were living. Lack of appropriate clothing, medical care, adequate food, and interaction were impossible to ignore. Sharing her story with family members and friends became so important - educating anyone who would listen on the needs of those so innocent and helpless.
That is when The Nightlight Foundation was born - the name itself signifying comfort and security. Seeing the suffering children firsthand - having one child look me in the eyes without speaking a word - I knew it was now my responsibility not to walk away and ignore them, they had been forgotten long enough. I knew my purpose - to shine a light on them and to bring as much awareness as possible. Out of that awareness comes comfort, security, love - three things all children of the world deserve.
